5 REASONS WHY YOUR HAIR ISN'T GROWING

A lot of ladies constantly ask this question: "Why is my hair not growing? I've spent so much on products and I try to be as gentle as I can be".  "I don't think there is hope for afro hair to grow at all..."

The myth that type 4 natural hair cannot grow is a huge misconception that has lingered for a long time. It is however true that other people with less kinky hair types, are better able to retain length better than others.

Notice that I said 'retain length' and not 'grow hair' because, everyone's hair is growing. Growth rates may differ due to genetics but except your are suffering from a medical condition that stops your hair follicles from producing new hair, your hair is definitely growing.

From my previous article where I wrote about Hair types you will find that some hair types because of their peculiarity have sebum travel quickly along their hair shaft. While some other hair types are dry and fragile because the sebum isn't able to travel easily down the strand.

Here are 5 reasons why your hair isn't showing considerable growth:

1. TOO MUCH FRICTION
African hair (type 4) is tightly coiled and prone to breakage at the bend points. It therefore demands that you reduce the amount of friction it is subjected to. Frequent use of combs (especially small tooth combs) is not beneficial to your hair. It encourages snaps along the hair strand ripping along with it a lot of hair. If you want to see growth, reduce or completely stop combing. You may also purchase seamless wide tooth combs

2. LACK OF MOISTURE
Your hair needs a lot of water more like a plant needs to survive. Drinking a lot of water as well as spritzing your hair at regular intervals helps to moisturize it. Dry hair is prone to breakage and more than anything else, apply enough moisture. You will need a spray bottle to do this effectively.

3. HANDS IN HAIR SYNDROME
A lot of naturals are guilty of this. They simply can't stop touching their hair every now and then. Frequent manipulation increases breakage and to curb this, keep your hands away from your hair. Some persons have learnt to keep their hairstyle simple so they don't have to touch it often.

4. HEAT DAMAGE
In a bid to force their hair into submission, a lot of naturals use heat to straighten their hair regularly. They love the stretched look and enjoy the compliments whilst forgetting that heat is not a friend of your fro. If you must use heat, make sure it is mild and coat your hair with enough heat protectant to avoid breakage.

5. DUST YOUR ENDS (TRIM YOUR HAIR)
Until a few years ago, I never knew the importance of trimming my hair. I felt if I wanted more length, why should I cut off what I already have? Split ends are small knots along your strand which results in tangles. To keep them from travelling up your hair, it is best to trim them at regular intervals. Once in three months is fine depending on your hair needs. It might be less frequent for others.

I believe if you apply these few tips you will notice great improvement in your hair. You may leave some more in the comments.
