THE RIGHT WAY TO WASH YOUR NATURAL HAIR
Washing your 4C natural hair the right way goes a long way to determine the health of your hair. In my last article, I related to you WHY I HATED WASH DAYS. I am so glad that recently, I went from hating to wash my hair to washing it as often as possible.
I mean, I now enjoy washing my hair. I look forward to it as much as I can.
Not to bother you with long stories, today I'll be sharing my tips for natural hair. The exact steps I follow that make my wash days worth looking forward to.
Like I always say, your hair is yours!
There is no absolute rule as to what you MUST do... Just follow what works best for you.
You will likely try out a few things before you come up with your own regimen but its okay to grab as much as you can.
Now, lets get going.
1. SECTION YOUR HAIR
When I first saw this on one of my favorite Youtubers video, I was like wait-a-minute! Where would I get that much time?
I finally tried it and have since stuck to it because it works so well.
This may not be necessary for ladies with TWA or short hair generally.
If your hair ranges between medium length to long (from 6 inches). It is extremely important to section your hair into about 4 to 8 smaller sections. You should twist them and apply your shampoo to the roots one section at a time.
2. PRE-POO BEFORE SHAMPOO
I'm really not a fan of this step but I know it works for some naturals.
According to Curlynikki of (curlynikki.com) Pre-pooing simply means coating your hair with a deep conditioning treatment or your favorite oils before washing. I only use oils once in a while when I include this step.
Pre-pooing helps to add moisture to your hair follicles.
It seems ridiculous to add anything to your hair and still have to wash it out but I know a lot of ladies who have found this helpful.
You should let this treatment sit for up to thirty minutes. It makes the hair soft and reduces the dry stripped feeling after a wash.
3. ACTUAL WASHING
I love to apply products to my scalp when washing my hair. I then run my fingers through each section gently scrubbing my scalp (I don't know if scrubbing is the right word).
The idea is that you don't want wash out all the oil from your hair if possible.
I'm also very choosy with shampoos. I have stopped using regular shampoos for about two years and I don't regret it.
I love my African black soap because it makes my hair feel great afterwards.
Part of my reason for hating to wash my hair previously was because my hair felt dry and tangled after using those store bought shampoos. I no longer feel that way. Hurray!!
4. DRY WITH A COTTON SHIRT
Many naturals are in the habit of towel drying their hair till every drop of water is sucked out. This may not be necessary .Just wrap your hair with an old T shirt to drain off excess water.
Your hair needs moisture so you shouldn't dry it all out. You will especially be thankful for this tip when you begin applying products in the hair.
5. DEEP CONDITION!!!
My dear friend, if you skip any step during your wash day it shouldn't be this step. It is so effective that once you experience the difference you won't stop half way through.
There are many different ways to deep condition but I'll just say that choose what your hair needs. It could be protein conditioning or moisture conditioning, find which works for you.
The good news is, it doesn't have to be expensive. There are a number of DIY recipes you can try if you can't afford the packaged ones.
Your hair would definitely thank you for this.
I enjoy leaving deep condition treatments in my hair for about 30 minutes to an hour so that it can penetrate deep into the hair shaft. Upon rinsing it out, I lightly dry out excess water from my hair and then apply my leave in products.
These are my tips for proper washing of my hair.
In all my entire wash takes less than 2 hours. I don't have to sit that long though, I just get busy with my normal activities for the night or weekend as the case may be.
If you find these tips helpful, do share with friends and let me have your comments too.
Once again, thanks for your time!
